We are all problem solvers. The issue is how effective are we in solving problems. Our personality has a big influence on the effectiveness of our problem solving ability. Does it mean that there is little we can do unless we change our personality?
How would Six Sigma help then? Six Sigma is about managing change and managing people. There are many tools under the Six Sigma methodology. The key is to ensure everyone, through the openness of the methodology and tools applied, is on the same page from onset to closing of the project.
In the process of helping your Child, it can be challenging to talk about a problem without sounding upset or distress. Using Six Sigma step-by-step methodology, the problem become a workshop, where your Child, loved ones and you are engage in meetings emphasizing on the exchange of information to help solve a problem. The depth and breadth of the use of Six Sigma will depend on the severity of the problem. The success of the project using Six Sigma is also dependent on how serious and committed you are to help your Child.
I like the following proverb about a situation : -
冰冻三尺,非一日之寒
3 feet of ice is not a result of one day’s winter.
The beauty of this anecdote is that it is applicable in describing a complex problem/situation and also the effectiveness of a solution.
The Problem : The gravity of the problem is a result of neglect and / or accumulation of small problems over time.
The Solution : The effectiveness of a solution will take TIME and EFFORT.
For those looking for quick fixes. Wrong blog.
The 6 Sigma Challenge - Your Child
“Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” ~ William A. Foster

VIP-Very Involved Parents : The CEO of the family
The impression everyone has of Six Sigma projects is excellence - achieving 100%, anything less is not acceptable, Yes? Yes and No. Yes because that is what the methodology is designed to achieved. No because in reality, top management is taking advantage of Six Sigma to jumpstart the improvement in the processes and also turn company around. The more dire the situation, the more value would Six Sigma bring to the company. If there is no fire, who bothers to fight fire?
I led Six Sigma projects in a multinational corporation as a Six Sigma Black Belt. I believe in Six Sigma and the beauty of its methodology. However, the key to Six Sigma is PEOPLE. Six Sigma is about change. Change is a constant that few people feel comfortable with. Six Sigma can create a lot of tension if not manage properly. I lead successful projects and I had my share of failed projects. One of the main reasons for success or failure is the involvement and commitment of the Senior Management, Leader in Six Sigma terminology. Six Sigma must be implemented top-down. In my view, results can surely be achieve via high-handedness. Look at Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric. Quality is achieved through a visionary like him. He has a vision of what he want GE to become, and he got his management to deploy Six Sigma to drive GE to success. The implementation of Six Sigma is rigorous and depending on the situation, Six Sigma can be ruthless.
Let’s face it; we are and always will be in Survival of the Fittest World.
What is the vision you have of your child? Does your child share that vision? How can Six Sigma be used to help you share your vision with your child?
Parents want the best for their children. The recent hoo-ha about Amy Chua, aka Tiger Mum, is interesting as she shared her views on how she coaches her children towards success. The execution of Six Sigma on Children may sound cold and ruthless to some. But when the methodology is implemented well, it is possible you jumpstart your Child success story.

“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”
The tuition industry is similar to the healthcare industry. For small ailments, the general practitioner would suffice; for serious injuries or medical problems, specialists must be engaged for the appropriate medical care. For students who performed poorly academically, parents would be willing to spend top dollar for MOE-trained teachers or master coaches from branded tuition centers and not forgetting the ever-popular and expensive motivational camps, in hope for a fast and full recovery.
No medical professional would guarantee successes in their treatment or full recovery to any patient. The doctor can treat the patient and prescribed the relevant medication, however the patient is responsible for his recovery. For example, if a patient continues to smoke even though an antibiotic has been prescribed to him for pneumonia, there is little chance for a full recovery.
The teacher is responsible for imparting knowledge and techniques, the student is responsible for his learning. Parents, whose role involve that of a cheerleader, a teacher, an enforcer and a friend, are the bridge that ensure their Child’s learning continues at home. As Parents, our involvement and encouragement can help our child excel. The price to pay of Six Sigma for your Child is your involvement.
By the way, be wary of any education professionals that offer a money-back guarantee on results. ;)

Hey my Child is not a factory!!!
Of course not. Your Child is a human. Six Sigma is about people problem solving. A factory is not just bricks and machines, we have people running the various processes, making a difference in the success or failure of the operations. Your Child’s education consists of processes. He is the owner of his own learning processes which there is always room for improvement.
Everyone has problems. To solve problems, there is a price tag. Are you willing and how committed are you to “pay” the price now by using the Six Sigma methodology, for your Child's problem that you deemed serious?
